UFG is looking for an ambitious, career-minded individual with strong analytical and people skills for a professional Actuarial Internship. This will be an excellent full-time opportunity during the summer to work under the direction and supervision of an experienced actuary. The Actuarial Intern will assist with supporting major actuarial work products which include reserve analysis, rate filing support, and various ad-hoc projects.


The Actuarial Intern will primarily assist with actuarial analyses and projects that are needed in order to properly and accurately support accounting and reporting requirements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Additional projects may include assisting the Underwriting department with rate filings or doing special projects for the claim department. All work will involve property & casualty insurance and must adhere to accepted actuarial standards, methodologies, and knowledge gained through either coursework or on the job training. The Actuarial Intern will work closely with the Actuary, Senior Financial Analyst, and Reinsurance Accountants.


The schedule is from 8:00AM – 4:30PM Monday - Friday during the summer months of 2019.





  • Complete detailed analyses for various purposes while researching and resolving various issues as they arise
  • Collect, assemble, and verify data which will be used for various purposes
  • Ability to recognize and correct anomalies within data and complex calculations
  • Accurate, effective, and efficient modification of existing Excel spreadsheets and creation of new spreadsheets
  • Prepare internal and external communications, including interactions with regulatory authorities and management that will describe and support reported results, observations, and recommendations




  • Undergraduate majoring in actuarial science, mathematics, economics, statistics, or a closely related area
  • Proven technical and analytical abilities, leadership potential, innovation, creativity and superb communication skills
  • Standard knowledge of data sources and applications used to conduct research
  • Working knowledge of data analysis
  • Ability to analyze data and review analysis from others and identify and resolve basic data issues
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to effectively collaborate with multi-disciplinary groups and all organizational levels
  • Organizational and project management skills needed to handle multiple concurrent assignments in a timely manner
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Works effectively in a team environment
  • Successful completion of one or more actuarial exams recognized by the Casualty Actuarial Society is preferred
  • Knowledge of basic actuarial and accounting principles and methods applicable to property & casualty insurance is preferred
  • Ability to write documentation describing data sources, processes, work flows, and complex calculations is preferred
  • Ability to write reports and memos that convert data analyses into key observations, conclusions, and recommendations is preferred
