The Workers Compensation Claims Supervisor will monitor and direct the adjustment of workers compensation claims by staff and independent claim representatives on claims within their assigned authority.  This includes initial directions, coverage analysis, review of work product, and general technical expertise as required based on the complexity of the claim, and the experience of the claim representative.  They will also monitor and direct experts and attorneys as required based on the complexity of the loss and/or legal proceedings. In addition, the Claims Supervisor assists in interviewing applicants and executes disciplinary actions when necessary.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide direction, control and guidance to Claims Representatives in the investigation and conclusion of claims.
  • Review reports and enclosures from Claims Representatives as well as other mail directed to claim files.
  • Analyze investigative material for exposure, coverage and damages to determine reserves and settlement values.
  • Follow consistent reserve practices to achieve the company guideline of overall reserve redundancy goals.
  • Maintain contact with Corporate Workers’ Compensation Claims Manager, Home Office Claims personnel and Counsel as necessary.
  • Deal directly with insureds, claimants, or counsel in settling losses.
  • Receive, evaluate and assign to counsel suits commenced against insureds or the company.
  • Provide guidance to counsel as the discovery is underway. Coordinate any additional investigation required.
  • Maintain records of performance for Claims Representatives.
  • Consult with Corporate Workers’ Compensation Claims Manager on performance reviews.
  • Personally go through the review with each employee. Provide information on salary review.
  • See that forms are filed (e.g. Index, PILR, Reinsurance, Reserve Notification, Risk Evaluation, and State form filings and DCI).
  • Maintain relations with underwriters, auditors, marketing, and agents operating within the territory.
  • Review daily, monthly and quarterly system reports as directed by Corporate Workers’ Compensation Claims Manager.
  • Complete reporting of goals and objectives and statistical data derived from review of reports.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • 4 year college degree preferred plus 5 years of insurance or insurance related experience plus
  • AIC or SCLA or Legal Principles or CCLA and PCLA of the AEI series preferred (If you don’t have one of these designations, complete one of them within 3 years.)
  • Meet the appropriate state licensing laws required to handle “multi line” claims.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of total experience in workers’ compensation claims.
  • 3+ years of workers’ comp claim field experience preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or mentoring experience preferred.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Ability and willingness to work towards CPCU if not obtained.
  • Assess the action and skill required to investigate and properly handle new losses. Select best person to handle.
  • Ability to assess the information provided to evaluate exposure, coverage and damages.
  • Must possess general working knowledge of applicable law, policy coverage and damage evaluation procedures.
  • Possess knowledge of medical terminology and injury analysis.
  • Have the capacity and ability to deal directly with people under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to use and teach negotiation skills.
  • Understand the fundamental basics of litigation and assist in the process. Must possess the knowledge and tact to deal effectively with attorneys.
  • Understand and work with various personality traits, evaluate performance, conduct effective reviews with employees, provide motivation and inspiration to those for whom responsible.
  • Possess tact and diplomacy required to relate to other department personnel in order to work toward a common objective.
