The Network Operations Center (NOC) Operator monitors, controls and responds to the operation of the mainframe hardware and software. The operator starts and stops system tasks, monitors the system consoles for unusual conditions, and works with the system programming and production control staff to ensure the health and normal operation of the systems.

 

The hours for this position are 11:00PM-6:45AM.

Responsibilities:
  • Operates and maintains Unisys mainframe, peripherals, and loads required media (tapes, paper, etc.) as required or needed.
  • Run Production Jobs
  • Monitors the control console and responds to operating and computer messages while ensuring that production tasks are run in the proper sequence.
  • Establish and Monitor Online Environment
  • Diagnose and troubleshooting of minor technical issues, including password and VM resets
  • Monitors infrastructure, application and network monitoring tools.
  • Resolves minor issues and notifies appropriate personnel for major issues.
  • Responds to offshore support requests after hours as they are received
  • Maintain Tape Library
  • Monitors the data center operations and responds to system issues/failures.
  • Maintain Work Schedules and Logs
  • Ensure that balancing forms are completed and verified prior to allowing dependent jobs to process.
  • Follow-up with programming staff / vendors when balancing anomalies occur.
  • Follow instructions given by development staff to process tests.
  • Print and distribute test reports to the developer.
  • Cross train on various shifts to understand the processes that occur throughout the day/night.
  • Accurately communicate problems/issues with the development staff when problems occur.
  • Communicate with equipment vendors and support centers to facilitate getting repairs completed in a timely manner.
  • Aids the development process by assisting the development staff test and debug new programs and/or procedures.

Qualifications:

 

  • High School plus two years of computer course work or previous operations experience.
  • Associate Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred.
  • Experience with Windows Server preferred
  • Operations experience within a mainframe environment is preferred
  • Knowledge of computer languages and equipment (WFL, Unisys Hardware and Software, Printers, Tape Drives, Windows Operating systems)
  • Knowledge of Scheduling and System Monitoring Tools.
  • Good problem solving / reasoning skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Understanding of computer hardware and software in both Mainframe and Server configurations.
  • Ability to operate system management software (BL/LIB, BL/SCHED, BL/DIST) effectively.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot Xerox printers for production printing.
  • Understanding of the Windows operating system and application software to perform daily tasks.
  • Ability to operate Veritas Net Backup and Avamar software for performing Server backups.
  • Ability to operate system software utilities (DMUTILITY, DUMPALL, Print System, etc.)
  • Ability to read, write, and understand WFL jobs.
  • Ability to learn new technology/software quickly
