We’re looking for an experienced leader with a background in surety claims or litigation to join our team as a Surety Claims Manager in our Cedar Rapids, IA office.

 

Reporting directly to the VP of Surety, you’ll use your knowledge of the surety industry, claims and the insurance legal and regulatory environment to manage a caseload of moderate to highly complex surety claims. Additionally, you’ll be responsible for supervising a five-person claims team and setting the operational strategy and direction for all Contract and Commercial Surety Claims.

 

Along with directing claims operations, and participating in mediations and negotiation settlements, you’ll also be providing leadership to the Surety claims team and acting as expert resource for other teams and business units at UFG.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for assessing the needs of the present and future Surety claims team, and providing the leadership, mentoring and guidance necessary to build and sustain a high performing workforce delivering exceptional claim handling results and quality service.
  • Direct claims operations including tracking measures, analyzing reports and financial activity, reinforcing goals, and determining methods and resources needed to carry out effective claims handling.
  • Develop, recommend and implement improvement initiatives which may result in cost effective enhancements in quality and service.
  • Analysis of coverage, liability, and damage expectations. Ability to participate in mediations and negotiation settlements. 
  • Drafting case summary reports in connection with reserve setting or increases and trial preparation.
  • Communicating reservation of rights and coverage denial letters, underwriting notifications, and other written communications.
  • Oversee the operational and technical work of the claims team and implement claim handling best practices.
  • Work closely with all areas of the Surety department, including underwriting, product development and marketing.
  • Build positive relationships with both internal and external customers to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with Distribution by participating in marketing meetings, agency and client visits and other supporting activities.
  • Direct activities of outside consultants and defense counsel.
  • Identify key issues and communicate to the proper audience in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Monitor and control expenses related to claim handling activities.
  • Manage according to established expense, reserve and settlement authority levels.
  • Effectively and creatively utilizes all resources (systems, people, etc.) to manage daily operations and to support growth and service initiatives

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree is required, with a major in Business Administration preferred. An MBA (or willingness to pursue) is also preferred.
  • Juris Doctor Degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Requires 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Litigation area that includes surety claims.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry, claims and the insurance legal and regulatory environment.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain required adjuster license(s).
  • Effective problem solver, with strong communication skills. Requires the ability to anticipate issues, seek out and analyze information to propose solutions, and take ownership for a successful resolution.
  • Proven ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with both internal and external groups.
  • Demonstrate the ability to win concessions without damaging relationships.
  • Understand applicable statutes, regulations and case law.
  • Strong people management skills with strengths in coaching and motivating staff. Serves as a role model in building effective relationships.
  • Excellent communicator; communicates frequently in a clear, concise manner.
  • Able to multi-task and reprioritize.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel and Word.
  • Must be able to travel approximately 20%.
