Surety Underwriter Trainee

US-IA-Cedar Rapids


We’re looking for an ambitious, career-minded individual with a strong financial aptitude and outstanding people skills for a professional career in Contract Surety Underwriting.




As a Surety Underwriting Trainee, you’ll learn to produce and underwrite a profitable book of surety business by building and maintaining strong relationships with independent agents.

You’ll use your analytical and decision-making skills to evaluate risk and determine acceptability within company parameters. On-the-job training will help develop your ability to determine acceptability of surety submissions, perform analysis of financial statements, read applications, analyze credit reports, as well as learn to use other sources of investigation.

The training program will teach the employee to work toward a profitable and controlled level of growth by servicing the existing business and meeting or exceeding the Department annual goals and objectives. The program will show the employee how to make recommendations on existing accounts.

Through travel with other underwriters in the department, the employee will learn to make successful agency visits, conduct beneficial contractor visits, and market our contract surety products to existing and new agents. After three to four years of training, relocation to other UFG locations is a possibility, if all parties are agreeable to this.

    • Learn to efficiently underwrite new surety submissions. Gather information regarding financial status, credit standing, and organization profit to analyze and determine acceptability of the risk.
    • Interaction with professional NASBP member agents as well as other agents who do business with UFG.
    • Become experience in new market development; ability to prospect, appoint and manage producer relationships to achieve production and profitability objectives.
    • Learn how to develop a profitable book of surety business of varying degrees of complexity for assigned territory, taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of the producer plant /territory and competitors, divisional objectives and overall market conditions.
    • Develop a solid following of existing broker and agency relationships within the assigned geographic region.
    • Make prompt, sound decisions within underwriting authority based on appropriate underwriting information consultation.
    • Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation/ information in account management systems and adherence to documentation standards.
    • Negotiate terms and conditions consistent with market segment requirements and standards within submission timeframe.
    • Attend selected industry events that provide interactions with producers and/or potential accounts.
    • Independently exhibit initiative with strong focus on results.
    • Responsibility for building and maintaining effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
    • Travel is required with frequent overnight stays; up to 15 to 20% of time will be traveling. Must have a valid driver’s license. Travel will increase as experience and responsibilities grow.
    • Perform special projects as assigned.

  • Should be proficient in: risk evaluation, contract knowledge, common sense judgment and big picture views.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), influencing, negotiating, listening, and interpersonal skills to effectively develop/maintain productive internal and external relationships.
  • Job requires an ability and willingness to learn financial analysis; an aptitude for numbers and finance is desired.
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with agency force to attract profitable business for UFG.
  • Good decision making skills are required; training will develop decision-making skills that will best benefit the company.
  • Ability to successfully deal with people in a tactful and diplomatic manner, to promote a positive company image with a focus on providing quality and timely service.



  • Four year college degree is required; majors in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or Economics are preferred.
  • Be actively engaged in additional industry and professional development and designations (AFSB, CPCU, MBA, etc.).       Additional classes and training required. UFG offers tuition reimbursement.
  • Candidates must have effective analytical, interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform fundamental financial analysis and willingness to travel.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
