UFG offers an internship program that is intended to promote a college students interest in pursuing insurance as a career choice, and possibly for a position within UFG upon their graduation.
The UFG internship program is designed to develop first-hand knowledge in commercial insurance coverage, underwriting and claims handling in a professional environment through on-the-job learning with our employees. This paid summer program (approximately 8 – 10 weeks during the summer break) gives students the business and technical skills they need to understand the core of our industry and to launch their future careers as successful UFG employees. A large focus of training will be in the Underwriting Department.
The selected interns will have an opportunity to compliment what they’ve been learning in school by receiving valuable onsite training, gaining practical experience, and learn more about the insurance industry as a whole. Our program will introduce the interns to career opportunities in commercial insurances through departmental rotation – working their way through the stages of insurance starting with Marketing and moving on to Loss Control, Underwriting, Support Services and finishing with Claim Adjusting. Over the course of this program, each intern will be expected to complete specific tasks and assignments from the trainers in each department to further develop the interns’ knowledge and skills in the insurance industry. The most amount of time will be spent in our Underwriting & Support Services Department. In the Underwriting Department, the student will first shadow a Underwriting Specialist whose primary goal is to provide quality technical assistance to insureds, agents and underwriters. Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following
- Entry of submitted applications and send customer service letters to the agents
- Entry of statistical information and computing of premiums to generate a legal contract for the insured
- Assist underwriters with information gathering and written correspondence
- Special projects and perform other duties as assigned which will provide the student with additional experience
From working with the Underwriting Specialist, the student will work with a Senior Underwriter to shadow the process of underwriting basic commercial lines of coverage.
Underwriters are the Heart of the Insurance Industry
Insurance is the contractual transfer of financial risk from one party to another. Commercial underwriters are financial professionals that evaluate the level of risk associated with insuring a current or prospective policyholder with business insurance policies. The underwriter uses that information to accept or decline the risk of insuring a company or organization and to set the premium for those that are accepted. Underwriters are more than just analysts – they must manage a profitable book of business by building strong relationships, and working closely with, independent agents. Successful underwriters have a special blend of analytical and marketing skills.
Underwriting requires a business-educated individual. We found that students majoring in Risk Management and Insurance or Finance to be the best fit. However, other business concentration majors have also proven to be successful. We are looking for the forward-thinking college junior who is ready to jump start their future career with UFG.
A summary of the qualifications we are looking for in intern candidates are:
- Currently in their Junior year of college
- Majoring in Risk Management and Insurance, or Finance, or other business major concentration
- Serious about considering a career in Commercial Insurance
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater preferred
- Problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient with spreadsheet and word processing software
- Attributes we seek include: excellent relationship builder; open-minded and team-oriented with collaborative work style; flexible mindset; and ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.
